All About the Ingredients for Delicious Brazilian Cheese Bread:

This recipe features a blend of simple ingredients that come together to create those delightful puffs of cheesy goodness. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  • Egg (at room temperature): An egg acts as a binder, helping hold the dough together and contributing to the signature chewiness. Bringing it to room temperature ensures even mixing.
  • Olive Oil: A touch of olive oil adds richness and moisture to the dough, preventing it from drying out during baking.
  • Milk: Milk provides additional moisture and contributes to the soft texture of the Pão de Queijo.
  • Tapioca Flour: The star of the show! Tapioca flour, also known as tapioca starch, is a gluten-free flour derived from the cassava root. It brings a unique chewiness and binds the ingredients without overwhelming the flavor.
  • Queso Fresco Cheese: This crumbly and mild Mexican cheese adds a salty and cheesy element to the Pão de Queijo. You can substitute it with another mild, shreddable cheese like ricotta salata or feta cheese.
  • Kosher Salt: A touch of salt enhances all the other flavors in the recipe.
  • Sweet Paprika (optional): A sprinkle of paprika adds a touch of smokiness and visual appeal to the finished product.
  • Flaxseed Flour (optional): Flaxseed flour can be used as an egg substitute for vegans. If using, mix it with water following package instructions to create a flax “egg.”
