Air Fryer Sweet Plantains

Sweet, slightly crispy, and mouthwatering, these air fryer sweet plantains are great as a snack or a side dish. They cook up quickly in the oven as well as the air fryer.

Plantains have been around for centuries as a staple food in the Caribbean and Latin America. They make healthy breakfast meals, one of the most common sides dishes Haitian Caribbean people cannot live without besides rice. Thank goodness that for many years the international food market has been expanding, and we are getting spoiled every day with exotic, healthy, and delicious foods.

Is making the sweet plantains in the air fryer worth it?

Frankly, it all depends on your cooking experience and preference. The air fryer does take just a few minutes less than the oven, and the results are about the same.

Is it a healthier option?

When compared to the oven, where you also need to add very little oil, in my opinion, it is about the same. Deep frying is the worst option as the plantains’ slices soak up the up and are soggy.

The ingredients in this Air Fryer Sweet Plantains Recipe

  • Plantains: ripe plantains are much better to use. The cooking time will vary depending on the ripeness of the plantains – so pay attention when the slices are in the air fryer.
  • Oil: I prefer using olive oil because of the taste. I have used avocado oil, coconut oil, and grapeseed oil. They are light oils, and you do not need to use them often. Less than one tablespoon is recommended use for two plantains.

Optional Ingredients:

  • Black pepper: a bit of peppery taste is superb
  • Salt: add a small amount to lower the natural sugar in the plantains.
  • Seasoning blends: use a small amount to avoid smoke and keep the taste of plantains as natural as possible.

Be sure to use a small amount of seasoning to avoid overpowering the sweetness of the plantains. There is no need to add more sure as all ripe plantains are sweet, and it is best to consume less sugar as possible. Natural sugar is better for the body.

How to Make Air Fryer Plantains

  1. First, rinse the plantains and dry them. Slice ripe plantains into ½-inch thick diagonal slices. Be sure all the plantains’ slices are the same size and thickness for even air frying.
  2. Place the sliced plantains into a bowl and drizzle with the oil. Gently toss until evenly coated.
  3. Place the plantains in the air fryer basket in a single layer. You may need to do two batches, depending on the size of your air fryer and the number of plantains you are using.
  4. Finally, cook the plantains as directed in the recipe card below. Halfway through cooking time, flip plantains over, and continue cooking.
  5. Remove and serve as a snack or side dish.
