How often and how to wash your kitchen towels

The answer is not that simple. You should wash your kitchen towels after cooking for several hours, after each use. You should also wash them if you’ve used them to wipe down your countertop, and after drying your dishes. If the towels fall on your kitchen floor, they should not be used to dry your dishes as you will be transferring bacteria onto your utensils, cups, and plates.

Washing your towels after each use does not mean that you need to do laundry or wash them by hand every day. That is up to you if you choose to do so.

It is best to own several kitchen towels if you cook and are in the kitchen a lot. This will alleviate having to wash the towels constantly.

How many clean kitchen towels should you have?

That is an easy question to answer. It is not a matter of numbers. It is a question of purpose and needs. You should have as many towels you feel you should have. A person who cooks every day cannot have 1 or 2 towels.

How many nights after cooking will you wash the towels? There are seven days in a week, and if you launder every weekend for example, then it is easy to know the number of towels you will need.

How to properly wash your towels

Washing your towels is easy. If washing by hands, soak the towels first in a solution of water, soap, and bleach to clean most bacteria. If you are using a washing machine, use an antibacterial or sanitizing cycle if you can and if not then add bleach to the cycle.

Foods get easily stuck and may stain the kitchen towels as well as oil. Presoaking may help to remove most stains. You can also use a pre-treatment stain to remove stains before washing.

Types of kitchen towels.

There are at least five types of kitchen towels.

  • Hand towels: for drying hands
  • Dish towels: for drying dishes, pots, and pans
  • Glassware and cups towels: for drying cups and glassware.
  • Counter towels: to clean countertop
  • Decorative towels: to decorate your kitchen

Again, each towel use will determine washing time. Decorative towels, however, do not need to be washed every week. At least once or twice a month should be okay.

Additional tips

Kitchen towels are exposed to all kinds of food and liquids and anything else they come in contact. We need to employ preventive measures to avoid bacteria transfer.
