Le Mi O Let (Millet with Milk) – A Healthy Haitian Breakfast Drink
Le Mi O Let, which translates to “Millet with Milk” in Haitian Creole, is a traditional and wholesome beverage enjoyed in Haiti. This smooth and creamy drink is made with cooked millet, milk, sugar, and spices, blended into a shake-like consistency. Served at breakfast or supper, it’s filling, energizing, and deeply comforting.
With just a handful of ingredients, you can make this healthy drink in less than 20 minutes—especially if you soak the millet overnight.
What Is Millet Grain?
Millet is an ancient grain that has been cultivated for thousands of years across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Known for its tiny, round seeds, millet comes in colors such as white, yellow, green, red, and even dark brown.
Similar to quinoa or rice, millet is naturally gluten-free and highly versatile. It can be cooked into porridges, added to salads, served as a side dish, or blended into drinks like Le Mi O Let.

Health Benefits of Millet
Millet isn’t just delicious—it’s also incredibly nutritious. Here are some of its benefits:
- Rich in fiber – Supports digestion and helps keep you full longer.
- Packed with minerals – A good source of magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.
- Gluten-free – Perfect for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
- Supports heart health – Its magnesium content may help regulate blood pressure.
- Low glycemic index – A smart choice for balancing blood sugar.
Adding millet to your diet, whether as porridge, grain side dish, or blended into milk, is a great way to boost overall wellness.

Why Haitians Love Le Mi O Let
In Haiti, Le Mi O Let is cherished as both a filling breakfast and a light supper drink. Its creamy texture, mild sweetness, and warming spices make it satisfying while still easy to digest. Many households rely on it as a quick, budget-friendly meal that delivers both comfort and nourishment.
Ingredient Descriptions
- Cooked Millet (Petit Mil preferred):
A small, gluten-free grain rich in fiber and minerals. Petit Mil is often used in Haitian cooking and provides a nutty flavor and creamy texture when blended. - Evaporated Milk:
Adds richness and creaminess to the drink. Regular milk or plant-based milk alternatives can be used, but evaporated milk gives a traditional taste. - Sugar:
A touch of sweetness balances the nutty flavor of millet. Adjust the amount to your preference or substitute with honey or another natural sweetener. - Ground Ginger:
Brings warmth and a gentle spice that complements the creaminess of the milk. Ginger also adds digestive benefits. - Salt (Dash):
Just a pinch enhances the flavors and balances the sweetness. - Lime or Lemon Zest:
Provides a refreshing citrus aroma and taste, brightening up the drink. - Crushed Ice:
Keeps the drink cool and refreshing, turning it into a smooth, shake-like beverage.
Equipment Needed
- Blender – for blending millet, milk, and spices into a smooth drink

Serving Suggestions
- Traditional Haitian Style: Serve chilled in a tall glass with a side of Haitian bread or cassava bread for a complete breakfast.
- With Savory Dishes: Pair with fritters (accras, malanga fritters, or akra) for a balanced meal of carbs and protein.
- Light Supper Option: Enjoy alongside boiled plantains or a small portion of fried sweet plantains (banann peze).
- Fruit Pairing: Complement the creamy millet drink with fresh tropical fruits like mango, papaya, or pineapple for added vitamins and a refreshing twist.
- Dessert Companion: Serve in smaller portions as a healthy, slightly sweet drink to accompany cakes, bread pudding, or fruit salad.
- On-the-Go Energy Drink: Pour into a thermos or reusable bottle for a filling breakfast shake you can take to work or school.
Tips for Cooking Millet
Cooking millet can vary depending on the type and brand. Some soften quickly, while others require longer cooking. To get the best results:
- Soak millet overnight – This softens the grains and shortens cooking time.
- Cook with water only – Add more water as needed during cooking.
- Blend while slightly warm – Warm millet blends more smoothly with milk.
If you’re using a standard blender, you may need to strain the mixture. A high-powered blender will create a creamy, drinkable consistency without straining.

Why Drink Grain Milk (Plant-Based Milk)?
Plant-based milks made from grains like millet, oats, or rice are becoming increasingly popular. Here’s why:
- Naturally lactose-free – Ideal for people who are lactose intolerant.
- Lower in saturated fat – A lighter option compared to whole dairy milk.
- Gentle on digestion – Easier to digest for many people.
- Nutrient boost – Grain-based milks contain fiber, minerals, and plant compounds that promote health.
Le Mi O Let is a wonderful way to enjoy the benefits of grain-based drinks while staying connected to tradition.

Where to Buy and How to Store Millet
- Where to buy: Millet can be found in Caribbean and African grocery stores, international food markets, health food stores, and online retailers like Amazon.
- Storage: Keep raw millet in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry for up to 6 months. For longer storage, refrigerate or freeze it. Cooked millet can be stored in the fridge for 3–4 days in an airtight container.
Final Notes:
Le Mi O Let is more than just a drink—it’s a taste of Haitian culture. It’s filling, nutrient-packed, and the perfect balance between tradition and modern health trends.
If your blender leaves small bits of millet behind, strain the liquid before serving. Just note that straining may remove some of the valuable fiber and nutrients.
Whether you enjoy it for breakfast, supper, or as a healthy shake alternative, Le Mi O Let is sure to become a comforting favorite.
Give it a try and experience this Haitian classic in your own kitchen!

I usually blended my millet in a powdered form and i cooked for few minutes ,then I served it with milk and honey for my breakfast . I hope this method is healthy ?
That’s a great idea! And I don’t see why it would not be healthy. You are making your powdered millet which is cheaper. It certainly avoids buying the ground millet, which is very expensive. These days we have to do what is necessary to save money and eat healthier. Thanks again for sharing your idea. Have an awesome time creating more healthy ideas. :)
