Milk with Haitian Cola
Who remembers Milk with Cola (lait avec cola – Haitian translation)? Soda with Milk (English translation) or better yet, who still makes it?
The power of technology is dangerous in so many ways when it is about food. Your brain cells overreact when you see something delicious or something you have not had in a long time. A few days ago, I found myself hating and liking Skype at the same time. I was chatting with my friend Fero from Haiti via Skype when his wife served him a tall glass of Milk with Cola.
At first, I was not sure what it was until he said to me “map fe ou songe payi ou? This translates into, I am making you miss your native country. I felt so nostalgic when reminiscing about old memories. But wait, I can have the same drink in the US. Thank goodness for import and export. Whoever came up with the product trading concept, I thank you! I no longer need to feel nostalgic about certain foods.
How to make Milk with Haitian Cola
To enjoy Milk with Cola the Haitian way, one must have Haitian Soda. Sorry guys substitutions are possible, but you won’t feel the full Aha! Effect. This drink as I was told is more enjoyable with evaporated milk, which makes sense because the soda/cola dilutes the milk. To adequately serve the drink, the soda/cola must be cold. Ice cubes may be part of the recipe, but if both ingredients are cold, there is no need.
Your local supermarket may already have Haitian Cola. Check the beverage aisle. If you cannot find it there’s always Amazon. You may also want to go to a West Indian or Spanish food store.

I have tried it with Almond Milk just for fun, and I have to say, it was not bad at all. When I spoke to Fero about the drink, he said any fruity cola or soda would be good. I guess he tried different brands. The cola or soda must be fruity, a mixture of fruits, not just orange soda or grape soda.
The label on the bottle must say fruit cola. If you cannot find any Haitian Fruit Cola, the Spanish/West Indian section of your supermarket may carry other brands of fruit colas.
I am so glad that I can share this recipe with you. I know it may not be a big deal or a super recipe, but it is the little things in life that always make us happier. Hope you like it.
