  • 3 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 4 apples such as Gala Fuji, or Honeycrisp, cored, peeled, and sliced
  • 1/3 cup water you may substitute for dark rum if preferred
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar dark or light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons all-purpose flour or tapioca flour
  • 1/3 cup water


  • On low medium heat, melt butter in a large skillet, add sliced apples, and cook for a few minutes. When softened, add the 1/3 cup of water, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Mix until all the ingredients are combined and the sugar has melted.
  • Dissolve flour or tapioca in the remaining 1/3 cup of water. Add the flour mixture to the apple mixture and bring to a boil.
  • Boil the mixture for about 2 - 3 minutes or until the mixture has thickened a bit.
  • Remove from heat and serve.
